The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles is located in the city of São João da Madeira, in the Aveiro district. It is set within a very serene green space, known as Our Lady of Miracles Park, which gives it a peaceful atmosphere, away from the direct hustle and bustle of the city center.
The construction of this sanctuary arose from a deep desire of the local community. The initiative for its construction emerged in the 1930s, driven by a dedicated committee that mobilized everyone's support. Its completion was made possible thanks to the generous donations of the population. The official inauguration, a milestone for the town, took place in 1938, in an event attended by the then-Bishop of Porto.
The sanctuary's architecture reveals a clear inspiration from the Neo-Romanesque style, visible in its robust lines, the sobriety of its forms, and the overall grandeur of the building. On the main façade, one of the most distinctive elements is the representation of Christ with open arms, an imposing figure sculpted in marble that gives a striking presence to the exterior. Inside, the center of devotion and the focal point of the sanctuary is the image of Our Lady of Miracles, a piece carved in wood that, with its symbolism, gives name and meaning to this place of worship.
