Situated atop a hill, in the Santiago de Riba-Ul area, this sanctuary dominates the landscape surrounding Oliveira de Azeméis. The site was formerly known as Monte do Calvário (Calvary Mount) and is now embraced by an extensive tree-lined park.
The main access to the sanctuary is via a staircase.
The history of this sanctuary dates back to 1870, when, facing a severe drought, the local community organized a procession to what was then Monte do Calvário, promising to build a chapel here. The first stone was laid in 1871, marking the beginning of the construction of the initial chapel, which was inaugurated in 1880.
The sanctuary's current structure began to take shape later, in 1923, with a new architectural project. The construction of the church and the creation of the surrounding park were completed in 1940.
The church features a Neo-Romanesque style, with a rectangular plan composed of different sections, including an atrium and a vaulted nave, culminating in a polygonal apse.
On the main facade, a portal with a perfect arch and a large rose window filled with colorful stained glass stand out. The gable is crowned by a statue of the Virgin, flanked by two elements simulating bell towers. The interior is characterized by marble cladding on the walls, forming blind arcades, and on the floor, which uses white and black marble. The double side windows and the stained glass inside, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, contribute to the space's illumination and atmosphere. There is also a choir loft.
Surrounding the religious building, a landscaped park designed in the romantic style extends, offering a tranquil and tree-lined environment. This space invites strolls and contemplation.
The park includes a serene lake, a bandstand that punctuates the landscape, and a fountain which, although reformed in the 20th century, originates from the 17th century. Within the park grounds, a bronze bust is also visible, and in front of the staircase leading to the sanctuary, there is a Cross.
