Situated in the locality of Avanca, municipality of Estarreja, Ribeira do Mourão is a waterway that extends serenely, forming an estuary. Part of its course establishes a natural border with the neighboring municipality of Ovar. This place is integrated into the vast water network of the Ria de Aveiro, offering a particular natural setting where the rural environment meets the proximity of the Ria.

Natural Environment and Leisure

Ribeira do Mourão has been transformed into a large and inviting space, designed for the quiet enjoyment of its visitors. It features extensive grassy areas and wooded zones, ideal for moments of rest and outdoor gatherings. Picnic tables are available, inviting relaxing breaks in contact with nature. It is a suitable setting for tranquil walking tours or cycling routes, providing an immersive experience in the landscape.

Biodiversity and Observation

This location is particularly interesting for observing wildlife, especially birdlife. The dense reed beds that surround one of the riverbanks serve as a refuge for various species, such as the Cetti's Warbler, whose songs are easily heard. It is common to spot flocks of Rock Buntings and water birds like the Common Gallinule and the more discreet Common Moorhen. In addition to the birdlife, a line of beautiful specimens of Pendunculate Oak marks the surrounding agricultural fields, complementing the botanical richness of the place.

Cultural Legacy

At the southeastern tip of the park, you can find the small Fonte de São Paio dos Augados, adorned with a tile panel. Its name refers to a curious local tradition: it invokes those who, in the past, could not travel to the great festival of São Paio in Torreira and, as an alternative, held their own celebration in this location. This fountain is an element of interest that adds a layer of history and symbolism to Ribeira do Mourão, connecting the present to the past experiences of the community.
