Barra Beach is located in the town of Barra, within the municipality of Ílhavo, on Portugal's western coast. This lighthouse, standing 62 meters high, is distinguished as the tallest in Portugal and one of the largest worldwide. Its construction began in 1885 and was completed in 1893, assuming a crucial role in guiding maritime navigation ever since. Barra Beach is known for its extensive golden sand, stretching as far as the eye can see, inviting long walks along the seashore. Furthermore, the beach has been awarded the "Accessible Beach, Beach for All" Flag, indicating its suitability and infrastructure for easy access for all visitors. The Historical Configuration of the Bar

The beach's name derives from its location next to the "bar," the connection point between the Ria de Aveiro and the Atlantic Ocean. The existence of this natural passage was fundamental for the region over the centuries, but its unstable nature posed a challenge. In the mid-18th century, a complex engineering project began, culminating in 1808 with the artificial opening and stabilization of the bar. This monumental work not only ensured safe navigation but also shaped the coastal landscape, giving rise to the current configuration of Barra Beach, which has transformed into a bathing and leisure destination.
