The Pena Mills Park is located in the village of Pena, part of the Codal parish, in the municipality of Vale de Cambra. This space unfolds within a natural environment, following the course of a stream that flows through the area, lending it a particular tranquility.
This park is a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of the local inhabitants over generations. It represents how ancestors harnessed the motive power of water to operate the mill mechanisms, using them to grind cereals, especially corn, an essential food in the region's traditional diet. It is a living example of how nature was integrated into daily activities.
The complex consists of a set of five mills, which have undergone a requalification process. This work has allowed these historical structures to be preserved and presented to visitors. One of the mills, in particular, stands out for having been adapted for the demonstration of the preparation and baking of corn bread, offering a practical perspective on the original function of these edifices and their role in community life.
The experience in the park is marked by the presence of the stream that feeds the mills through water channels. The flow of this stream varies according to the season; in winter, with a larger volume of water, small waterfalls form, enriching the sound and visual landscape of the place. This natural water flow is a central element that shapes the park's environment and experience, making it dynamic and distinct in different seasons of the year.
