The Souto do Rio River Park is located in the Borralha area, in Alhandra, within the municipality of Águeda. It is situated at a low elevation by the riverbed, surrounded by a dense patch of vegetation that transitions between the urban area and the more rural banks.
The toponym “Souto” refers to the ancient chestnut groves that shaped this landscape over the centuries. Its proximity to the town of Águeda provides a balance between ease of access and a preserved natural environment.
The alluvial banks are characterized by sandbars and small fine sandy beaches, where the water flow becomes lower and allows for gentle bathing in clear waters. The line of tall trees (especially alders, willows, and ashes) offers generous shade, creating cool refuges on warmer days.
Amidst informal paths and clearings dotted with small shrubs, there is a harmonious succession of landscapes: at times lush, with centennial trunks, at others more open, with views of the water's surface. It is a space that invites tranquil strolls or moments of contemplation of the river's course.
At the heart of the park is the Mega Picnic Park, a space with tables, stone benches, and fixed barbecues, designed for group gatherings. It also includes structures for radical sports (such as a climbing wall, tree climbing, and parallel bars) which, although currently requiring supervision, bear witness to the initial investment in a diverse range of activities.
There is also a small basketball court and paved areas for informal games. Some pedestrian bridges and suspended walkways, previously operational, remain as vestiges of a more audacious intervention in the landscape.
Although some infrastructures show signs of degradation (with disabled restrooms and equipment awaiting recovery) an atmosphere of serenity is maintained, reinforced by the birdsong and the constant murmur of the river. The contrast between well-maintained areas and wilder sections lends a genuine character to the place.
The Souto do Rio River Park is, above all, a place for riverside gatherings, where nature and human structures surprisingly coexist. With each visit, a different nook is discovered, bearing witness to the constant dynamic between preservation and public use.
