The Park of Nossa Senhora da Saúde is located in Gestoso, São Pedro de Castelões, municipality of Vale de Cambra. This place is situated on a spur of the northern slope of the Arestal mountain range, in a rural and very peaceful area. Its elevated position offers a mountain environment, inviting contemplation and contact with the surrounding nature.

A Green and Serene Retreat

This park is an extensive wooded area, designed to provide moments of peace and leisure. Walking along its long avenues, lined with leafy trees, is a pleasant experience. In the central area, in front of the sanctuary, there is a serene water mirror and a fountain, which complement the beauty of the place. An esplanade with a bandstand on the northeast side of the park offers an ideal spot to enjoy the calm atmosphere and the natural scenery.

Sanctuary: History and Architecture

At the heart of this park stands the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, an imposing religious building exhibiting elements of Neo-Gothic revivalist architecture. Although the current sanctuary was built in the 20th century, its history dates back to a primitive chapel from the 18th century. Over the years, the site underwent several expansion and reconstruction works, adapting to the needs of growing devotion. Its main façade, facing southeast, stands out for its pointed arches and the pinnacles that adorn the corners. Inside, the flat wooden ceilings, painted blue, and the figured tile panels on the wainscoting give a distinctive character to the space, complemented by carved wooden altarpieces.

A Point of Devotion and Gathering

The Park of Nossa Senhora da Saúde and its sanctuary have been, since ancient times, an important center of Marian devotion in the district of Aveiro. Historically, this place was a point of reference for fishermen and seafarers, who found here a symbol of guidance and faith. This tradition remains alive, annually attracting numerous pilgrims and visitors who flock to the sanctuary, especially during the August festivities. The park thus serves as a meeting point between coastal people and mountain communities, celebrating faith and unity.
