Situated in the tranquil locality of Óis do Bairro, in the municipality of Anadia, the Paço de Óis, Casa de Montalvão stands in isolation next to the main road. It is immersed in a vast estate, where the coexistence of native and exotic forest species can be observed. This natural setting complements the grandeur of the house, with a small garden adorned by boxwoods and lakes stretching along the east facade.
This centuries-old property, classified as an Immovable of Public Interest, is a testament to Portuguese architectural and social evolution. Its construction spanned from the 17th to the 19th centuries, resulting in a building that reflects different eras and styles. The history of the Paço is intrinsically linked to the Castelo Branco family, particularly António de Miranda Castelo Branco, a nobleman from the Royal Household who, in the late 18th century, commissioned the organization of the "Tombo" (inventory) of the Óis do Bairro estate, a document that attests to the importance and dominion of this property in the region. Although it suffered a fire in the 20th century, which caused extensive damage, the house was rebuilt, keeping its historical essence alive.
The Paço de Óis presents itself as a remarkable manor house with a U-shaped floor plan, embracing a central courtyard, delimited by a high wall and an imposing gate. This gate, flanked by rusticated pilasters, is topped by a coat of arms bearing the rampant lion of the Castelo Branco family, a symbol of their lineage. In the central body of the building, a portico supported by columns creates a gallery that opens to the outside, offering a view of the surrounding space. On one of the lateral wings, a chapel with neo-Gothic revival architectural elements stands out, while bay windows and balconies with iron balustrades enrich the facades. The combination of plastered masonry, stonework, and wood gives the ensemble a robust and elegant appearance, worthy of its history.
In addition to its architecture, the Paço de Óis is valued for the vast land that surrounds it. The estate that houses the property is a space of natural beauty, with designed gardens, carefully manicured boxwood areas, and water features that invite contemplation. At a higher point on the property, the ruins of an old masonry mill can still be observed. This structure, once vital for the agricultural prosperity of the region, offers a glimpse into the local rural history and provides a view of the landscape.
