The S. Pedro da Palhaça Museum is located in the locality of Palhaça, which is part of the municipality of Oliveira do Bairro. It is situated on Rua de Vila Nova, in the São Pedro area. Its presence in the town has been linked, since its origin, to the preservation of heritage assets that testify to the local history and culture.
One of the museum's central collections is dedicated to Sacred Art. This area reflects the initial intention of its founding in 1981, which aimed to protect and conserve religious heritage from the Mother Church of Palhaça. It is possible to observe pieces such as liturgical vestments dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, statuary from the 17th to the 19th centuries, as well as paintings and various objects used in religious worship, covering a period extending to the 20th century.
In addition to the religious aspect, the museum dedicates space to Ethnography, offering a glimpse into the daily lives, work, and traditions of the community. Visitors can see regional costumes from the 19th century up close, admire examples of lace and embroidery from the 19th and 20th centuries, and discover a variety of agricultural tools and objects related to the region's traditional craftsmanship. The ethnographic collection also includes household utensils, illustrating life in local homes during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The S. Pedro da Palhaça Museum also plays a role in safeguarding historical memory through its Historical Archive and Library. The archive brings together a diverse set of materials, such as cartography, copies of ancient documents (some dating back to the 12th century), varied documentation up to the 20th century, donated family estates, and a considerable photographic collection. It also includes musical documentation and historical legislation. The library holds collections dedicated to the Discoveries, the former colonies, and, with particular relevance, the history and culture of the Bairrada region and the district of Aveiro.
