The Ethnographic Museum is located in Gafanha da Boavista, an area with a more local and community character within the municipality of Ílhavo, specifically in the São Salvador urbanization. The museum is housed in the old Boavista Primary School, a building that, due to its former function, integrates organically into the local environment, reflecting the community's roots.
This museum space is the result of the effort and dedication of the Rancho Regional da Casa do Povo de Ílhavo, an association founded in 1984. The rancho was born with the purpose of preserving and reviving the dances, songs, and uses and customs that characterize the people of Ílhavo. The museum is a natural extension of this mission, acting as a center for the collection, conservation, and sharing of the rich popular culture of Ílhavo, ensuring its traditions remain alive.
Inside the museum, visitors can discover a vast collection of objects carefully gathered by the rancho members throughout its existence. Each piece offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the people and families of the region, revealing their occupations, habits, and the tools that shaped local life. These artifacts tell stories of the past, providing a deeper understanding of the essence and identity of the community from Ílhavo.
