The Ethnographic Museum of Válega is located in the town of Válega, which belongs to the municipality of Ovar. It is housed in the area known as Roçadas de Espinhos, with its entrance on Rua Irmãos Oliveira Lopes.
This museum was founded in 1998, driven by the joint efforts of the local folklore group and the parish of Válega itself. Its creation was made possible through careful collections of objects and testimonies that tell the story of the community over time.
The space housing the museum is, in itself, a historical piece. It is a traditional house dating back to the 18th century. Due to its importance and cultural value, this building was recognized as a Property of Municipal Interest in 1985, thus preserving its original design.
The museum's collection is primarily composed of ethnographic pieces that offer a faithful portrait of life in Válega between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here, one finds objects related to domestic life, agricultural work, and industrial activities of the period. Traditional costumes, farming tools, and old photographs help illustrate this past. There is also a space dedicated to the art of tile-making and a small collection of sacred art.
Upon visiting the museum, one discovers an organization designed to tell the local history. In addition to the main exhibition areas, there are reserves that can be visited, allowing a closer look at a greater diversity of pieces. A traditional kitchen recreates the domestic atmosphere of yesteryear, and a small shop offers items related to local crafts and products. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions and activities that explore the community's knowledge and practices.
