The museum is located in the São Pedro area, integrated into the urban fabric of Águeda. It is surrounded by a green zone that includes beautiful gardens, providing a tranquil and inviting environment for visitors.
The origin of this museum lies in the vast art collection assembled throughout the lives of Dionísio Pinheiro and Alice Cardoso Pinheiro. This collection, which initially furnished their home in the city of Porto, reflects the taste and acquisitions of the founders.
The museum's heritage is remarkably diverse, encompassing different art forms and periods. It is possible to admire painting, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, pieces in ivory, silver, tapestries, and crystals. The collection includes works ranging from Classical Antiquity, with examples of Greek vases, to pieces from the 14th to the 20th centuries, notably featuring 19th and 20th-century Portuguese painting and furniture of various styles.
The museum space is housed in a building purpose-built to accommodate this important collection, located on the former Quinta de S. Pedro, which belonged to the couple. Designed by architect Agostinho Rica, the building was inaugurated as a museum in 1985.
The interior is organized to welcome visitors and display the collections. It features six rooms dedicated to the permanent exhibition of the collection and an additional room for temporary exhibitions. The building also has distinct spaces such as the Agora Space, which can also host exhibitions, and areas like the Winter Garden and the Underground Space, which complement the exhibition circuit.
Beyond the mere display of objects, the museum seeks to bring pieces to life, presenting them as narrators and active agents of memory. Through their diversity and the way they are exhibited, the works aim to create a space of experiences for the visitor.
This museological approach invites a deeper discovery of Portuguese and European culture, stimulating imagination. The museum is a meeting point with art history, where one can encounter different artistic expressions and epochs, from ancient Greek workshops to Portuguese masters of recent centuries.
