The memorial is located in Sobrado, in the municipality of Castelo de Paiva, next to the national road that provides access to the old Quinta da Boavista estate. Situated on a slightly elevated platform, it is surrounded by scattered dwellings and low-lying heathland, creating a tranquil setting.
Its proximity to the main road allows the monument to be sighted in passing, but it is only by stopping at the site that one can truly appreciate the reliefs and the texture of the granite up close.
Dating back to the mid-13th century, this memorial stone is associated with the tradition of medieval funeral processions, particularly with the retinue of D. Mafalda on her journey to Arouca Monastery. The exact identity of the deceased remains uncertain, but the stone bears witness to the practice of marking funeral itineraries with granite memorials.
Classified as a National Monument since 1950, the Sobral is one of the rare examples of medieval memorial stones in Portugal that have remained intact to this day, without significant alterations to their original design.
The ensemble rests on two vertical stelae, topped by circular headpieces, supporting two horizontal slabs. The lower slab, interpreted as a sepulchral cover, displays in relief a long sword and a Greek cross inscribed within a circle.
The lateral faces of the stelae feature engraved Latin crosses. Crafted from local granite, the monument combines the robustness of the material with the sobriety of Romanesque forms, highlighting the symbolism of prestige and faith characteristic of the era.
The surrounding area remains without major landscaping interventions, accentuating the feeling of stepping back in time. The silence is only occasionally interrupted by the road noise, reinforcing the contemplative nature of the site.
Visitors can take advantage of the rural serenity to focus on the granite's texture and imagine the ancient funeral procession, appreciating the simplicity and historical weight of this Romanesque vestige.
