The Gafanha National Dune Forest is located in the municipality of Ílhavo, in the locality of Gafanha, District of Aveiro. This vast forested area is strategically situated between the channels of the Ria de Aveiro, offering a varied landscape that extends from dense forest areas to more open and agricultural areas, culminating in its proximity to the Atlantic coast. To the north, the forest is bordered by a navigation channel.
Spanning 688 hectares, the Gafanha National Dune Forest is predominantly covered by maritime pine, a species that stands out in the landscape, although it also features areas with acacias. Its foundation in 1887 was a fundamental step in stabilizing the dunes and preventing the advance of sand, a significant challenge at the time. The afforestation project, which proved crucial for forest development between the Vouga and Mondego rivers, was notably led by Eng. Egberto de Magalhães Mesquita and completed in the 1940s, creating a green lung of great environmental importance for the region.
This natural space invites immersion and relaxation, offering an environment conducive to direct contact with nature. The Gafanha National Dune Forest is an excellent place for hiking and wildlife observation, such as birds and small mammals. It has well-defined trails that allow for exploration, whether on foot or by bicycle, providing an enriching experience for those seeking tranquility and the beauty of forest and dune ecosystems.
Within the forest, there are elements that reflect the history and culture of the local community. This is the case of the Schoenstatt Sanctuary, a Catholic place of worship dedicated to Our Lady, linked to a spirituality movement with roots in Germany. Additionally, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Campos, inaugurated in 1957, is another point of interest that hosts regular masses and is part of what was once the Gafanha Agricultural Colony. Next to the chapel stands the Statue of the Settler, a tribute to the farmers who worked hard and contributed to the agricultural development of the region, especially during the 1940s when part of the forest was used for the establishment of this colony.
The Gafanha National Dune Forest, due to its forest composition, requires particular attention to fire risks. During periods of high risk, circulation may be temporarily restricted as a safety measure. It is advisable to check daily conditions and alerts before planning your visit, thus ensuring a safe stay and the preservation of this valuable natural heritage.
