The Bussaco National Forest is located in the Bussaco Mountain Range, in the parish of Luso, in the municipality of Mealhada. It is a protected area and was classified as a National Monument in 2018.
This forest was created by the Order of Discalced Carmelites in the early 17th century. The Carmelites also built the Convent of Santa Cruz do Bussaco, which operated between 1628 and 1834. In 1888, the convent was partially demolished to make way for the current Palace Hotel do Bussaco.
The forest is rich in diverse plant species from around the world, brought by the Carmelites. The famous Bussaco cedar (Cupressus lusitanica) stands out. The adernal, a rare plant with very limited global distribution, is also found here.
The mountain range reaches 549 meters in altitude and is known for its natural beauty. It is an area that covers several municipalities, including Mealhada, Mortágua, and Penacova. The waters of Luso and Caldas de Penacova originate here.
In 1810, an important battle took place in this mountain range between the Anglo-Portuguese forces, led by the Duke of Wellington, and the French troops of André Massena. This historical event is remembered at the Bussaco Military Museum.
The space is ideal for hiking and nature walks, with trails that allow you to explore the rich biodiversity of the forest. The tranquility of the environment invites reflection and outdoor recreation.
