The Artisanal Fishing Marina is located in Gafanha da Encarnação, Ílhavo municipality, situated along the edge of the Aveiro Lagoon (Ria de Aveiro). It is located along the marginal road connecting Costa Nova to the lagoon, benefiting from direct access to the sand and the pedestrian boardwalk.
The space opens up to a landscape of tranquil waters, with views of the other side of the lagoon and the Atlantic coastline, where fishing boats can be seen lined up at the pier.
For centuries, Gafanha da Encarnação has been a hub of fishing activity, and this marina keeps alive the heritage of local fishermen. Here, artisanal boats are still used, maintained according to traditional methods, preserving ancient construction and maneuvering techniques.
The maintenance of the boats and the constant presence of fishing professionals transform the site into a living testament to the deep relationship between the community and the sea.
The atmosphere combines the serenity of the lagoon waters with the rhythmic movement of boats entering and leaving the port. The Portuguese cobblestone 'path' and the landscaped promenade invite visitors to enjoy the landscape while observing the comings and goings of fishermen at work.
In the late afternoon, the golden reflection of the setting sun highlights the colors of the boats and the small trees scattered along the paths, lending the place a tranquil and almost cinematic atmosphere.
The marina's infrastructure includes small fishing warehouses, wooden pontoons, and net drying racks, elements that reinforce the authentic character of the space. These material vestiges illustrate the daily life of the fishermen and the stages of fish preparation.
Amidst the daily loading and unloading activities and the natural hues of the boats, visitors have the opportunity to understand the cultural value of this fishing community and the historical importance of the lagoon in the regional economy.
