The Henriqueta Maia Garden is located in the Lagoa urbanization, in the heart of Ílhavo (São Salvador), in the municipality of Ílhavo. This central space serves as a meeting point and thoroughfare in the urban area. Historically, the garden marked the transition between older Ílhavo and the areas inhabited by fishermen and farmers, such as Malhada and Alquidão, which then formed the "new city."

A Meeting Point Steeped in History

Before adopting its current name, this space was known as Praça das Almas (Souls' Square), playing a vital role in Ílhavo's daily life. It was here, in 1838, that the daily market was established, a place of exchange and social interaction that revitalized the city. Although the market was relocated in the early 20th century, the garden retained its essence as a meeting place for generations of Ílhavo residents. In 2021, the garden was renovated, with a significant reinforcement of green areas and tree clusters, and the introduction of paths that invite walks and smoother city transit.

The Memory of "Rádio Faneca"

The Henriqueta Maia Garden is inseparable from the popular "Rádio Faneca", a tradition that enlivened this urban space for decades. In times past, "Sound Booths" broadcast radio programs on Sunday afternoons, with loudspeakers hanging from the trees. Music, dedications, and period advertisements created a unique community atmosphere, drawing residents and neighbors to gather in the garden to stroll, chat, and court. This experience of sharing and camaraderie, which once included the sale of simple snacks, is now remembered and celebrated in the garden itself, which continues to be a place of social gathering and culture for the community.
