The Parish Church of Barcouço, dedicated to Our Lady of Ó, stands prominently in the heart of Barcouço village, located within the municipality of Mealhada. Its central position in the village's urban fabric gives it a notable presence, serving as a landmark and a hub for community life.
The church building exhibits Baroque-inspired religious architecture, characterized by a single-nave plan that extends to the chancel. Externally, the facades are enhanced by cornerstones topped with pinnacles and rectangular fenestrations distributed harmoniously. The main facade stands out with an engraved frieze evoking the temple's history, and an entrance portal surmounted by a broken pediment framing a niche, topped by a quatrefoil oculus. A prominent tower, attached to the left corner of the chancel, completes the ensemble, featuring cylindrical gargoyles on its cornice.
Inside, the space is dominated by the spaciousness of the nave leading to the chancel. The vaulted ceiling features remarkable decoration, with polychrome painting displaying scroll and acanthus motifs, lending a visually rich atmosphere to the space. A particularly interesting element is an inscription found on the access door to a storage room, testifying to the temple's foundation: "M(ARI)A IHS ESTA OBRA FES O CON / SELHO DE BARCOVSO O ANO DE 1639".
The history of the Parish Church of Barcouço is marked by various stages. Although the 1639 inscription points to the temple's original foundation, the building seen today was erected in 1736, resulting from the work and dedication of the parishioners and the then prior, Dr. António Garrido. Over the years, the church underwent several renovations, such as the one carried out in 1760. However, one of the most challenging moments occurred in 1917, when a fire devastated the interior, leaving only the architectural structure intact. This episode demonstrates the resilience of the site and the community, which allowed for its recovery and the maintenance of its role as the spiritual center of the parish.
