Located in the Praia da Barra urbanization, this church is situated in Gafanha da Nazaré, an integral part of the municipality of Ílhavo. The building is integrated into the urban fabric of this coastal area, serving as a landmark for visitors to the area.
The Parish Church of the Holy Family was inaugurated in 1987. Its construction arose from the need to replace the small Chapel of St. John, which was located near the lighthouse and had become insufficient to accommodate the growing community of Praia da Barra at the time.
The building features a modern architectural style. A certain diversity in its features is noticeable, resulting from the work of various designers who contributed to its design over time.
Its floor plan is based on a diagonally oriented square shape. The main entrance draws attention due to two lateral bodies that rise, evoking the image of raised hands.
Another particular element is the baptistery space, which stands out with a cylindrical body. At its top, a cross-shaped structure was designed so that sunlight creates a projected shadow inside, adding an interesting visual effect.
