The Bunheiro Mother Church is located in the town of Bunheiro, in the municipality of Murtosa. It is found in the area known as Casal, often referred to as Lugar da Igreja (Place of the Church), indicating its central and historical position within the village's urban fabric.
This temple has a history that dates back to ancient constructions on the site. However, its current structure and appearance largely result from a significant reconstruction that took place in the late 18th century. This intervention defined the architecture observed today.
Inside, the church houses a collection that reflects different artistic periods. It is possible to appreciate sculptures spanning a long period, from the 15th to the 18th century. The altarpieces adorning the altars are characteristic of the 18th century. Older elements, such as the carved stonework, date from the 17th century, while 20th-century tile panels add a more recent touch to the decoration.
The Bunheiro Mother Church is also notable for possessing a historic pipe organ. This musical instrument was built in 1871 by William Sweetland. Over time, it underwent phases of restoration and repair, such as those carried out by W. J. Burton and Geo. Osmond, which allowed it to maintain its sound and heritage value.
