The Mother Church of Vagos is centrally located in the village, in a square that serves as a landmark in Vagos' urban area. Its location makes it easily identifiable when exploring the town center.
The building of the Mother Church currently observed resulted from a reconstruction in the 1970s. The original church, which dated back to the 18th century and had more modest architectural lines, was demolished in 1972 to allow for the widening of National Road 109. The design of the current church, with a more contemporary style, sought to integrate some elements of the primitive structure, creating an interesting contrast between the old and the modern.
One of the most notable aspects connecting the current building to its past is a limestone arch from the previous church. This element was carefully preserved and integrated into the galilé (the church's entrance portico), visible on the right side. The arch stands out for its elaborate ornamentation, featuring reliefs that include vegetal motifs, geometric shapes like diamonds, and figures of putti (small figures resembling angels or cherubs) at its keystone, with a style that evokes neoclassical elements.
Upon arriving at the church, its main facade presents a solid presence, although with a relatively sober design. The entrance portal, a perfect arch, is flanked by double columns. Above the portal, in a niche, is the image of the church's patron saint, Saint James. On the left side of the facade, the bell tower rises, crowned by a coruchéu.
