Situated in the Gafanha do Carmo area, this church serves the local community.
It is integrated into the urban fabric of this part of the municipality of Ílhavo.
The history of the current parish building begins with the decision to construct a larger and more modern temple for the growing community of Gafanha do Carmo.
Construction began in June 1969. This new space replaced an earlier chapel that no longer met the needs and which, due to its proximity to the street, was subsequently demolished.
About two years after construction began, the community had a more functional and welcoming building. The solemn blessing of the church took place in November 1974.
The church was designed to offer a space with adequate capacity for the population, being described as modern, welcoming, and pleasant.
The interior features an organization designed for religious celebration, providing a serene environment for visitors.
Inside, the main altar is central and positioned for good visibility, being the natural focal point of the space.
Various images of saints enrich the temple. Of note is the larger image of the patroness, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, conceived to fit the new space. There is also an older image of the same patroness, from the original chapel, which is kept in the sacristy. The temple also houses images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Fátima, and Saint Thomas.
