The Mother Church is situated in the center of Gafanha da Encarnação, a locality integrated into the municipality of Ílhavo. It is located in an urban area of the parish, positioned near the edge of the estuary, facilitating access and its integration into the daily life of the community.
The site where the church stands has a past dating back to the mid-19th century. The first religious building on this site was a small chapel, constructed in 1848. Later, this chapel gave way to a larger temple, erected at the beginning of the 20th century, specifically in 1907. The current Mother Church, a more recent construction, was inaugurated on August 22, 1993, replacing the previous building and continuing the religious tradition in the same location.
The church visited today, inaugurated in the 90s, features a modern design. A particular characteristic is that it does not possess the traditional altars found in most older churches. However, the building integrates various areas of interest and utility. In addition to the main worship space, it includes a sacristy, a chapel intended for funeral services, an amphitheater for events, and even a museum space. The Chapel of Signatures is noteworthy, where some panels testifying to local history are preserved.
This church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Incarnation. Under the protection of its patron saint, the Mother Church plays a central role in the religious and community life of the parish of Gafanha da Encarnação, serving as a meeting point and a place of faith for its inhabitants.
