Located in Praça Marquês de Pombal, in Aveiro, this church is part of the city's historical heritage and is one of the main tourist attractions.
Since 1910, it has been considered a National Monument, standing out for its historical and cultural importance.
The convent where the church is located was founded in the 17th century by D. Brites de Lara. The request for foundation was made at the time to King D. João IV, and the convent was established after the death of D. Brites, with the work being completed by her son, D. Raimundo de Lencastre.
The church was started in 1704, with the chapel of the palace of D. Brites being used temporarily before the construction of the church. Throughout the 18th century, the church was enriched with decoration, including gilded wood carvings, tiles, and paintings.
The church has a rectangular plan and a simple but imposing facade. The interior is full of gilded wood carvings, with different styles, such as Proto-Baroque, Joanine Baroque, and Rococo.
The altar and walls are adorned with paintings and gilded wood carvings. In the chancel, images of the life of the Virgin Mary can be observed, while the ceiling of the nave features scenes from the life of Christ and Saint Teresa.
The wall covering up to door height is decorated with blue and white tile panels, attributed to the workshop of António Vital Rifarto, in the 18th century.
