The Macinhata do Vouga Folk and Ethnographic Group has its roots in the locality of Macinhata do Vouga, a parish belonging to the municipality of Águeda. This area is strategically located on the left bank of the Vouga River, in a region whose cultural influence extends to the northern slope of the Caramulo Mountain Range. This location places the group within the vibrant identity of the Lower Vouga Region, which serves as the setting and inspiration for their performances.
Founded on April 8, 1989, this group was born from the commitment and dedication of local inhabitants who shared the desire to perpetuate and disseminate the most genuine traditions of their land. Through continuous work, the Macinhata do Vouga Folk and Ethnographic Group assumes the role of guardian of collective memory, being recognized as a member of the Portuguese Folklore Federation, which underlines its importance in the national cultural landscape.
One of the most striking aspects of the group's performance lies in the faithful reenactment of the region's popular traditions. With deep respect for their roots, they highlight representations of moments such as the Cantar das Janeiras and the Traditional Pig Slaughter, rituals that were an integral part of daily and social life. The group is dedicated to presenting the dances, songs, and ethnography that characterized the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering an authentic glimpse into the past.
Authenticity is a fundamental pillar of the group's presentation, visible in their costumes. These garments are meticulously collected in the region, reproducing how ancestors dressed, transporting observers to another era. The repertoire is equally rich and diverse, encompassing a wide range of folk tunes and choreographies. The performances recreate daily labors, such as corn husking, hoeing, and harvests, but also moments of celebration and pilgrimage, with a special focus on the energetic circle and line folk dances, which reflect joy and community life.
