Built on a small islet by the edge of the Ria de Aveiro, the fort is located in the Barra de Aveiro area, in Gafanha da Nazaré, Ílhavo municipality. Its position marks the meeting point between the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, giving it a role as a lookout over vessels entering and leaving the bar.
The surroundings blend the traditional housing of fishing neighborhoods with vast salt pans and extensive sandy beaches. Nearby, the bar lighthouse adds a characteristic nautical element, reinforcing the feeling of connection to the sea.
Constructed in the mid-17th century, during the Portuguese Restoration War, it was designed to defend and control access from the Ria de Aveiro to the Atlantic. The work included dredging and sandbank modeling, with the aim of ensuring the bar's stability and facilitating maritime traffic.
Over time, coastal dynamics and the opening of a definitive channel in 1808 rendered its original function obsolete. Since 1974, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest and remains under the guardianship of the Port of Aveiro Administration.
The fort features a bastioned layout, with angled bastions connected by a low wall. Traces of the two bastions are still recognizable today: in the south, three embrasures open in the parapet and fragments of the defensive cordon.
In one of the angles, a modern signaling tower contrasts with the original military geometry, offering clues about the transformations it has undergone over the centuries.
From the top of the walls, a broad landscape over the lagoon and the ocean can be seen. The soft late afternoon light casts reflections on the salt pans and water, drawing luminous paths that invite contemplation.
The tranquility of the place, punctuated by the flight of coastal birds and the murmur of waves near the lighthouse, creates a setting where historical heritage meets Atlantic nature.
