São Marcos Park is located in the parish of Fajões, in the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis, alongside the São Marcos Path. Nestled on a gentle slope, this space opens up to a cultivated valley, offering a quiet retreat away from the urban centre.
The surroundings are marked by agricultural plots and a tiny watercourse, which adds freshness to the environment. Access is via old cobblestone paths, characteristic of the area, lending it a rural charm.
The park extends under diverse tree cover, where cypresses and eucalyptus trees stand out. The generous shade from these specimens invites leisurely strolls or outdoor reading moments.
At certain times of the year, wildflowers and shrubs with soft hues appear, contrasting with the deep green of the trees. The rustle of the wind in the treetops creates an atmosphere of serenity.
The tables and benches, carved from local granite, recall the traditional “águas-frias” (cold water springs/picnic spots) of northern Portugal, where families gathered for socializing and picnics. These stone elements lend robustness and durability to the picnic area.
The park also preserves vestiges of old dry-stone retaining walls, highlighting ancestral construction techniques and reinforcing its connection to the surrounding rural landscape.
At its centre, a small paved clearing serves as a meeting point, where visitors can spread a blanket or set down picnic bags. The presence of discreet lighting poles ensures peaceful visits even in the late afternoon.
The slightly sloping terrain offers views of the nearby fields, ideal for contemplating the golden light of dusk. The absence of urban noise reinforces the sense of isolation and rest.
