Cruz Alta is located in the locality of Luso, belonging to the municipality of Mealhada, and stands at the highest point of the Serra do Buçaco, at an altitude of 547 meters. Its position on the northern slope of the mountain offers a unique natural setting, integrated within the vast and dense National Forest of Buçaco, an area of great botanical richness.

This elevated location gives it the condition of a natural viewpoint, from where it is possible to observe the extent of the surrounding landscape, highlighting its importance as a point of observation and contemplation.

Broad Perspective:

One of the most striking aspects of Cruz Alta is the amplitude of the view it provides. From this point, the gaze extends in a 360-degree panorama, revealing a diverse and impressive landscape. On clear days, it is possible to spot distant geographical landmarks, such as the Serra do Caramulo to the northeast and the majestic Serra da Estrela to the southeast.

To the west, the Atlantic Ocean can be glimpsed, while closer, the National Forest of Buçaco reveals itself as a green mantle covering the mountain. This vast perspective allows for a comprehensive reading of the region's geography, making the visual experience particularly rich.

The Meaning of the Cross:

At the heart of this elevated point stands a stone cross, built in the 17th century. This structure replaced a pre-existing wooden cross that had been damaged by lightning. The choice of polished stone for its construction gave it greater durability and a more solid presence in the landscape.

Cruz Alta is not merely a geodesic marker; it also holds historical and religious symbolism. It represents the terminal point of the Via Sacra do Buçaco, a path of cultural significance passed down by the Discalced Carmelite monks who once inhabited the mountain. Its presence, though discreet against the vastness of the view, is a link to the site's history and heritage.
