Location

The Chapel of Senhora do Bom Sucesso is located in the parish of Válega, in the city and municipality of Ovar, in Aveiro, Portugal.

History

It is believed to have been built in the final years of the 17th century, with an inscription dated 1721. It was erected by Captain João Vaz Correia as a chapel for his daughter, keeping her in strict seclusion.

Prayer Intentions

Captain João Vaz Correia instituted sixty annual masses in the chapel, divided between twenty for himself, thirty for the institutors of the entail (occurred in 1730), and ten for his parents and siblings.

Transformation and Subsequent Owners

Over time, the chapel and the associated house had other owners and were later adapted to become the Casa do Povo (People's House). During this adaptation, interventions were carried out respecting the original structure, according to the project of architect Januário Godinho.

Classification

The complex is classified as a Municipal Property of Interest by Edital nº 8/2005, published on February 9, 2005.

Ethnographic Museum

Currently, the site houses the Ethnographic Museum, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the region.

Architectural Features

The chapel is attached to a single-story house. The main facade presents a symmetry in the spans, with a central portal flanked by rectangular windows. The chapel has pilasters at the corners of the facade, crowned by pinnacles, and a triangular pediment. The interior stands out for its wooden coffered ceiling and the altarpiece of gilded and polychrome wood carvings.

Tombstones in the Pavement

On the floor, three tombstones can be found, one of them belonging to the founder João Vaz Correia, dated 1728, and two others of Mariana de Jesus, from 1730, and Ana Maria Soares de Almeida, from 1742. The identity of the last two buried ladies is unknown, but they were probably relatives of the first owner.
