The COMUR, Murtosa Municipal Museum is located in Pardelhas, in the municipality of Murtosa. It is situated in the heart of the town, occupying the original premises of a historic canning factory. The building is set in a geographical environment that reflects the strong connection of the local community to the Ria de Aveiro and its natural resources.
This museum is a space dedicated to the history of the Murtosa community and, in particular, to its canning industry. The main focus is on the production of eel preserves, a product that has become a distinctive brand of the region, recognized for its uniqueness throughout the Iberian Peninsula. The museum perpetuates the legacy of a people who knew how to transform the Ria's resources into opportunities, highlighting Murtosa's identity and uniqueness in this sector.
Inside the museum, a visitor can discover the factory's history and its deep connection to the local community. It is possible to follow the development of the canning process through all its phases, from the arrival of the fish to the dispatch of the final product. Through a contemporary museography, which combines design, educational content, and interactivity, the space allows visitors to understand how the specific characteristics of Murtosa and the Ria de Aveiro drove this manufacturing unit, as well as the way of life of its workers. Elements such as engaging infographics invite visitors to learn about the fish species of the Ria and even virtually experience the "cooking" of a "caldeirada" (fish stew), enriching the experience.
The museum occupies the former premises of the "Fábrica de Conservas da Murtosa" (Murtosa Canning Factory), a building of historical value that has been carefully rehabilitated and adapted for its new function. This architectural intervention allowed for the safeguarding of an emblematic structure, which now functions as a guardian of the memory and stories of all those who contributed to the "Fábrica das Enguias" (Eel Factory). It is an innovative and multidisciplinary museum, where Murtosa, the Ria, the sea, work, industry, advertising, and gastronomy harmoniously converse, in a space intended to be a reference in museology.
