The Old Square Fountain stands in the heart of the Historic Center of Santa Maria da Feira, located in Praça da República, locally known as Praça Velha. This central area of the city invites a peaceful stroll, where the fountain stands out amidst a pavement combining rolled pebbles with traditional Portuguese cobblestone, forming interesting geometric patterns. The square features a natural slope, elegantly overcome by a few steps leading to the central element.

The urban surroundings are composed of balanced-volume buildings that embrace the square, creating a harmonious and inviting environment for those who traverse it. Its central position makes it a point of reference and contemplation in the city landscape.

Design and Architectural Characterization

This fountain is a notable example of Baroque architecture, characterized by its "basin fountain" form. Its main structure rests on a quadrangular base tank, whose faces form segments of a circle, giving it a distinctive silhouette. From the center of the tank rise two circular basins, elegantly connected by columns, a larger one at the bottom and a smaller one at the top.

The lower basin stands out with its base decorated with geometric motifs and four sculpted mascarons from which water spouts. The ensemble is topped by a spherical element, also with spouts, crowned by a finial. The robustness and beauty of the fountain result from its construction entirely in granite, a material that gives it durability and a solid presence in the urban landscape.

History and Purpose

Built in the 18th century, the Old Square Fountain has a history dating back to its original function. Initially, this fountain was conceived for the cloister of the former Lóios Convent, where it played an essential role in water supply. Over the centuries, its purpose adapted to the needs of the community.

Currently, the fountain maintains its relevance, but with a different purpose. Transformed into an ornamental fountain, it now serves as a point of cultural and recreational interest, enriching the public space of the square. Its presence recalls the locality's past, while beautifying the present and providing an element of serenity to visitors.
