The Municipal Environmental Interpretation Centre is located in Lugar dos Moinhos, in the locality of Aveiro. Its position is strategic, as it is directly integrated into the unique landscape of the Aveiro Lagoon, offering an immersion into the lagoon environment. This natural setting provides a starting point for observing the surroundings, with a comprehensive view of the salt marshes and characteristic channels of the Lagoon. From the centre, it is possible to contemplate the North Aveiro Saltpans and the city of Aveiro itself, with the landscape extending into the distance, including the lighthouse, and, on clearer days, the Freita and Caramulo mountains.
The building of the Municipal Environmental Interpretation Centre stands out for its contemporary architecture, designed to harmonize with the natural beauty of the Aveiro Lagoon. Its design is remarkable and distinctive, reflecting an approach aimed at enhancing the relationship between the space and its surrounding environment. Surrounded by a carefully planned garden, which houses various stations dedicated to local biodiversity, the centre offers an invitation to tranquil exploration and contemplation of nature, elegantly integrating into the riverside landscape.
This centre's primary mission is to promote knowledge and appreciation of the Aveiro Lagoon ecosystem. It is a space dedicated to environmental education, where visitors are encouraged to deepen their understanding of the remarkable lagoon, its ecological values, and the culture associated with it. Through interpretation areas and permanent exhibitions, such as those dedicated to the Habitats of the Aveiro Lagoon and the Mammals of the Aveiro Lagoon (featuring footprints and other distinctive elements of these animals), the centre provides an immersive discovery of the region's natural richness.
The Municipal Environmental Interpretation Centre offers unique experiences for observing the fauna and the vast landscape of the Lagoon. In one of the rooms, equipped with interactive multimedia resources, a large window allows visitors to calmly observe animals in their natural environment, without disturbing them. At the top of the building, there is an observatory offering a panoramic view. From there, one's gaze encompasses the extensive channels and salt marshes of the Lagoon, revealing the complexity of the lagoon and its continuous interaction with the territory, offering a privileged viewpoint on the scale and diversity of this ecosystem.
