Fílveda Waterfall is located in Bouças, a village in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. Its setting is essentially natural, developing in a valley shaped by the river, where human presence integrates into the forest environment, offering direct contact with the surrounding nature.
Fílveda Waterfall, also known as Frágua da Pena Waterfall, stands out for its remarkable size, with water plunging from a height of over 40 meters in successive drops. Over a river stretch of about 200 meters, the total elevation difference is 75 meters, creating a scene of great beauty and natural force. The grandeur of its waterfalls is one of the most striking aspects of this place.
The formation of the waterfall is due to the prolonged action of fluvial erosion, which over time worked on igneous rocks that presented less resistance. This millennial natural process shaped the valley and allowed the water to create the drops observed today, revealing the geological dynamics of the region.
Beyond the waterfall, the valley preserves a significant stretch of woodland, which can be considered primeval. This area is a refuge for oak groves and other deciduous species, which constitute an essential part of the local flora. The surrounding natural environment contrasts with other areas where pine and eucalyptus plantations are more common, offering a glimpse of the region's original forest landscape.
Access to Fílveda Waterfall involves a pedestrian path. Visitors will find a path that, although it may be narrow and uneven along about 100 meters, leads to a stairway. This stairway, consisting of 70 steps, closely follows the waterfalls, allowing for a detailed observation of the cascade from its top to its base.
