The Ferreira de Castro House-Museum is located in Salgueiros, in the parish of Ossela, which is part of the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis. This area is characterized by its rural environment, framing the house in a setting that evokes life in the countryside, as it would have existed at the time of the writer's birth.
This building, dating from the mid-19th century, is the house where José Maria Ferreira de Castro was born and spent his early years. With a simple rural design, its architecture reflects the humble origins of the writer's family. Over time, the house was adapted and preserved to maintain the atmosphere of the era when it was the "cradle house" of the future author.
Upon visiting the house, it is possible to get an idea of the environment in which the writer grew up. The two-story building displays different aspects of rural life and Ferreira de Castro's journey. On the ground floor, the old winery preserves some traditional agricultural tools, such as the wine press and the press, testaments to the activities linked to the land. On the upper floor, there are smaller divisions, such as the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms. Noteworthy are the room where the writer was born and his mother's room. These spaces house personal objects that help trace his journey, including the old dictionary acquired in Belém do Pará, which he himself considered his "first wealth," and the suitcase and shoes he used on his round-the-world trip in 1939, creating a symbolic contrast between his origins and his later life.
Outside the house, the backyard and a small pine forest have been preserved, respecting Ferreira de Castro's express wish. This green space contributes to the atmosphere of the house, connecting it to the natural landscape of the region and offering a glimpse of the kind of surroundings that marked his childhood before he left for Brazil and began the journey that would lead him to become an internationally recognized writer.
The House-Museum resulted from Ferreira de Castro's desire to preserve this place, so significant to his personal history. After reacquiring the property, he arranged for it to be decorated in a way that recreated the atmosphere of his childhood. Later, he donated it to the municipality with the aim of making it a museum dedicated to his origins, thus allowing visitors to connect with the early life of one of the most important Portuguese writers.
