The Egas Moniz House-Museum, also known as Casa do Marinheiro (Sailor's House), is located in Avanca, in the municipality of Estarreja, in the district of Aveiro. This place is important as it was the birthplace of António Egas Moniz, a Portuguese physician who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The house dates back to the 18th century, but was completely renovated by Egas Moniz in 1915, with a project by the architect Ernesto Korrodi. The house was transformed into a museum, which opened to the public on July 14, 1968.
The museum has a vast art collection, highlighting:
, Porcelain and faience from various brands, including the East India Company, Canton, Saxe, and Sevres.
, Paintings by renowned artists such as Carlos Reis, João Reis, Falcão Trigoso, Eduardo Lapa, Silva Porto, Henrique Medina, José Malhoa, and Abel Salazar.
, Collections of engravings, sculptures, drawings, glass, silverware, and tapestry.
The House-Museum also presents a section dedicated to the scientific contributions of Egas Moniz, namely:
, Objects related to his discovery of Angiography, an imaging technique that allows visualization of cerebral arteries.
, Graphic exhibitions illustrating the stages of research that led to the first visualization of cerebral arteries in a living human being, in addition to the discovery of Prefrontal Leucotomy.
Since 1997, the Egas Moniz House-Museum has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, recognizing its historical and cultural value.
In addition to the house, visitors can explore the gardens and the surrounding area, which maintain the tranquility and charm of a historical environment, ideal for relaxing walks.
