Casa da Eira is located within Rio Ul Park, a vast green area in the heart of São João da Madeira, in the Travessas area. Surrounded by indigenous vegetation and well-defined trails, it is situated in an elevated and slightly isolated area, with views of the park's natural and urban surroundings. The space conveys a sense of tranquility, ideal for breaks during walks or bike rides. The building emerges in a paved clearing, delimited by stone walls, which discreetly highlight it within the landscape.
Casa da Eira is a simply designed building, with stone walls and an upper floor of slatted wood, topped by a traditional ceramic tile roof. The building was conceived as a multifunctional support space for Rio Ul Park, evoking the agricultural constructions of the region's rural past. Despite its rustic appearance, it is integrated into a contemporary project of environmental and heritage enhancement.
Beyond its symbolic function, it currently serves as a meeting point for events and educational activities, with a focus on initiatives related to the traditional corn and bread cycle.
This space revives the communal atmosphere of yesteryear, where agricultural work was experienced with sharing and celebration. It is in this context that old-fashioned corn husking recreations are regularly held, featuring traditional music and demonstrations of agricultural tools. Casa da Eira then transforms into a place of living memory, where different generations come together to revive ancestral practices.
During these initiatives, it is possible to observe agricultural implements, learn about corn storage techniques, and understand the importance of these activities in the rural daily life of the past.
Integrated into one of the largest urban parks in the country, Casa da Eira is one of several spaces that are part of a thematic route on the bread cycle, alongside the Mill (Moinho) and the Oven House (Casa do Forno). This complex allows visitors to discover, step by step, the stages from harvesting to the making of corn bread.
The park, designed by architect Sidónio Pardal, offers natural trails, wooded areas, and a strong educational and environmental component. Casa da Eira, in this context, helps reinforce the link between cultural heritage and nature, being one of the elements that best represents this symbiosis.
