Carreiro Velho is located in Perrães, in the municipality of Oliveira do Bairro, occupying an area of approximately 1.2 hectares. This location is situated on the southern and western bank of Pateira de Fermentelos, the largest natural lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, benefiting from an unobstructed view over this body of water. Its position, downstream from the confluence of the Levira and Cértima rivers, provides a rich and dynamic natural setting.
This space invites a deep connection with nature, serving as a refuge for those seeking tranquility and fresh air. It is particularly valued for the richness of its avifauna, making it a privileged location for birdwatching. During the winter months, Pateira comes alive with the arrival of numerous species of ducks and other waterfowl. In summer, it is possible to spot herons, such as the elegant Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and the colorful Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), which seek food in the waters.
Traditionally recognized by the local population as a meeting and celebration point, Carreiro Velho hosts various recreational and social activities. The park features wooden walkways that rise above the terrain, offering pleasant routes and the opportunity to contemplate the landscape from different angles. Some of these structures, built on stilts, serve as a reminder of the floods that the Cértima river causes in certain winters, adapting to the area's natural dynamics. For birdwatching enthusiasts, there are dedicated structures, including an observatory and a tall tower accessible via a wooden walkway. A stage is also available for events, and children will find a playground for moments of play.
