The Mortuary Chapel is located in Gafanha da Encarnação, a town in the municipality of Ílhavo. It is integrated into the building of the Main Church, which stands as a central point in the urban fabric of this community from Gafanha, easily identifiable by its prominent presence in the local landscape.
Although the Mortuary Chapel is integrated into the current Main Church, a building constructed and inaugurated in the 1990s, the site where it stands has a longer religious history. This land previously housed earlier places of worship, dating back to the mid-19th century. The first chapel on the site dates from 1848, later replaced by a church in the early 20th century, until the construction of the modern complex that exists there today.
The Mortuary Chapel is an integral part of the modern Main Church of Gafanha da Encarnação. The current building, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Encarnação (Our Lady of the Incarnation), the patroness of the parish, was conceived as a multifunctional space to support the community, encompassing, in addition to the mortuary chapel, other facilities that serve both parish and local life.
