The Chapel of Saint Macarius is located in the Senhorinha area, in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. It is situated in an urban area but with a certain isolation, positioned halfway up a slope. The building stands out in the landscape due to its elevation above the street. Access is gained via a wide platform, at the base of which there is a bench integrated into a niche. From this platform, two flights of stairs lead directly to the temple.
The construction of this chapel, sometimes referred to as the New Chapel of Saint Macarius, dates back to the late 20th century. Its construction began in 1980 and was completed in 1982, being officially inaugurated in June of that year. The need for a larger religious space arose with the increase in population in the area, replacing the old chapel which was no longer sufficient to accommodate the faithful. The first mass in this new building was celebrated in early 1982.
With a rectangular plan, the chapel features a design with three main naves developed on distinct levels. This stepped configuration is designed to optimize the entry of natural light into the interior space. The roofs of the different naves also vary, with single- and double-pitched roofs, contributing to the architectural dynamism of the building.
Inside, visitors can observe several artistic elements of interest. In the left side nave, a ceramic panel stands out, evoking the origin of the Eucharist, a work created by the painter Álvaro Rocha. In the presbytery area, the altar table is notable for its composition, formed by two superimposed stones resting on two pillars with inscribed crosses. On the right side of the altar, there is a built-in altar where the tabernacle is located, accompanied by elements of religious imagery that have undergone restoration.
