The Chapel of Saint John the Baptist is located in Praia da Barra, a dynamic and highly frequented coastal area in the municipality of Ílhavo. It is integrated into the urban environment of this beach resort, being a visible presence in the landscape for those strolling through the locality.
This chapel holds particular significance for the Praia da Barra community. For a period, it served as the main place of worship for residents, before the construction of the current parish church, dedicated to the Holy Family. Despite the subsequent construction of the larger church, the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist continues to be a local landmark, annually hosting festive celebrations in honor of Saint John.
One of the distinctive visual features of the chapel is its main facade, which is covered with azulejo panels. This ornamentation gives it a unique identity. The panels visible today were created by the artist Lorenzo Limas and were applied in 1949, as part of renovation works the chapel underwent during that period.
