Classified as a National Monument since 1910, the Vista Alegre Chapel is an important tourist attraction in Ílhavo, considered the first National Monument of the municipality.
The chapel was commissioned by Bishop D. Manuel de Moura Manuel at the end of the 17th century. This bishop, a native of Serpa, dedicated the chapel to Our Lady of Penha de França and intended it to be a place of personal devotion. Its construction began around 1697, but was completed in 1706, after his death.
The chapel is an example of Mannerist style with Baroque influences, standing out for the simplicity and elegance of its facade. The main entrance has two bell towers and a triangular pediment decorated with geometric motifs. The interior of the chapel is equally impressive, with a single nave and a chancel featuring a beautiful marble altar and gilded wood carvings.
Located in the chancel, the bishop's tomb is one of the most outstanding pieces of the chapel. It was sculpted by the French artist Claude Laprade, being a masterpiece of Baroque sculpture. The tomb depicts the bishop lying down, with a composition that symbolizes death, eternal life, and resurrection, reflecting the allegories of the time.
The vault of the chapel is decorated with frescoes, including the Tree of Jesse, one of the most perfect in Europe, and the Assumption of Our Lady, in the chancel. The nave floor is covered with 18th-century tiles, representing scenes from the Life of the Virgin.
The chapel is located in Ílhavo, next to the Vista Alegre factory, and is freely accessible, with guided tours available. During the International Day for Monuments and Sites, admission is free.
The Vista Alegre Chapel is not only a religious landmark but also an important example of art and history in Portugal. Its decoration and the tomb of D. Manuel de Moura Manuel are considered pieces of great artistic value, being a fundamental part of the cultural heritage of the region.
