The Chapel of Our Lady of Navigators is located in Gafanha da Nazaré, integrated into the structure of Forte da Barra. It is strategically positioned, very close to the bar area of the Ria de Aveiro, a place of great importance and visibility in the coastal and lagoon landscape.
The construction of this chapel began in 1863, under the direction of engineer Silvério Pereira da Silva. Its construction was a notable effort, financed at the time by the bar pilots of the Ria de Aveiro themselves. This fact underlines the deep connection and devotion of the local maritime community to Our Lady of Navigators since ancient times. The chapel is recognized as the oldest Catholic temple among the parishes that constitute the Gafanha peninsula.
This chapel stands out for its particular architectural features. The exterior walls feature battlements, giving it an appearance that integrates it into the defensive context of Forte da Barra, where it is located. The main portal, made of Ançã stone, is notable for its richly carved jamb in a spiral pattern, topped by an elegant ogival arch.
Being dedicated to Our Lady of Navigators, the chapel is a place of strong symbolism for the population of Gafanha da Nazaré, a community whose roots and livelihood are intimately linked to the sea and to fishing and maritime activities. The devotion expressed here reflects the faith and hope of those who trust in divine protection on their aquatic journeys.
