The Ermida Chapel is located in the village of Paço da Ermida, integrated into the broader area of Ermida, in the municipality of Ílhavo. It is situated in an urban environment, adjacent to the historic Paço da Ermida, with which it was historically connected. Its presence marks the landscape of the locality, offering a point of interest for those exploring this area of Ílhavo.
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, the Ermida Chapel is believed to have been built in 1904, as an integral part of the Paço da Ermida Manor complex. Its existence is deeply intertwined with the history of the influential Pinto Basto family, founders of the renowned Vista Alegre porcelain factory, who resided in the manor for about two centuries. Significant figures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries passed through the Paço and the chapel, such as Alberto Ferreira Pinto Basto, who served twice as president of the Ílhavo Municipal Council, and was also a councilor for the Aveiro Municipal Council. Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary in the locality has older roots, with records of a brotherhood dedicated to this patron saint in pre-existing chapels in Ermida, demonstrating a continuity of faith in the community.
This small temple features religious architecture of simple and harmonious design. Its longitudinal plan consists of the main nave and a chancel, slightly lower and narrower. The bell tower, attached to the left side of the building, rises with its pyramidal spire, contrasting with the gabled roofs of the main body. The facades, mostly plastered and painted white, are characterized by contoured gables and an eaves, with the main arched portal flanked by large windows. The building was the subject of a recent conservation intervention, initiated in 2015 by the Ílhavo Municipal Council, with the aim of preserving its significant patrimonial and architectural value for future generations.
Although usually closed to the public, the Ermida Chapel acquires a particular and central significance in the life of the community during the annual festival in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. This celebration, held annually on the first weekend of October, is a moment of deep devotion and local tradition, transforming the tranquility of Ermida into a meeting point and a place of faith. On these days, the chapel is the heart of the festival, bringing together residents and visitors around a tradition that remains alive over time.
