The Esgueira Riverside Pier is located in the Esgueira estuary, an area of the Ria de Aveiro that connects directly to the Esgueira River. This channel, one of several that extend from the northern part of the city of Aveiro, provides a unique perspective on the aquatic environment. Its position allows for observation of the vast water expanse, especially at high tide, and the natural mosaic of salt marshes that stretch along the banks.
Situated in the locality of Esgueira, municipality of Aveiro, the pier is part of the Agras do Norte area, offering a tranquil and open environment where the Ria's landscape is revealed in its full amplitude.
The Esgueira River channel once held fundamental importance for the development of the former municipality of Esgueira. This territory, which received its first charter in 1110 and saw its municipal status reaffirmed by King Manuel I in 1515, depended on the navigability of this arm of the Ria for its life and economy. The decline in the municipality's relevance was accompanied by the progressive silting of the Ria de Aveiro, which gradually reduced the canal's navigability.
In an effort to revitalize and recognize this heritage, a new modern pier was built in the 21st century. This structure represents a commitment to rediscovering and increasing accessibility to the Esgueira River channel, serving today as a starting point for those wishing to explore the boardwalks that run along this part of the Ria.
The Esgueira Riverside Pier offers an invitation to observe the rich local biodiversity. Along its wooden structure, visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the differences between high and low salt marshes, vital ecosystems of the Ria de Aveiro that host diverse forms of life. This is an ideal location for bird watching and contemplation of the natural landscape, which transforms with the variations in the tide.
Walking in the vicinity of the pier, along the boardwalks, is a way to connect with nature, enjoying a serene and invigorating environment. To ensure that everyone can experience this natural beauty, the place was designed to be accessible, allowing people with different mobility levels to enjoy the space and the surrounding landscape.
