The Bestida Pier is located in the town of Bestida, in the municipality of Murtosa, in an area in close proximity to the tranquil waters of the Ria de Aveiro. Its position offers a privileged perspective over the water mirror, allowing one to spot Torreira, situated on the opposite bank, and establishing an interesting visual connection with this area.
For decades, before the construction of the Varela Bridge in 1964, Bestida Pier was an essential crossing point. From here, boats regularly departed, transporting people and goods between Bestida and Torreira. This pier played a vital role, functioning as a true aquatic "highway" connecting the two banks of the Lagoon, shaping the life and commerce of the region.
Currently, Bestida Pier maintains its relevance for the local fishing community. The site serves as a safe harbor, providing a secure refuge for fishermen's boats, and continues to be a space for activity and interaction with the lagoon. Its most recent construction, in 1999, reinforces the continuous importance of this point for the people of the Lagoon.
Integrated into a natural route, Bestida Pier is a place that invites landscape contemplation. The surroundings are marked by the beauty of the Ria de Aveiro, with its channels and the unique salt marsh ecosystem. It is an excellent spot for those who appreciate observing the avifauna that inhabits this lagoon, offering moments of serenity in contact with the vibrant nature of the region.
