The Cais do Côjo Bridge is located in the center of Aveiro, over one of the canals that cross the city. It is one of the most recognizable pedestrian crossings in the area, connecting two banks of intense urban and commercial life. The bridge is surrounded by historical buildings and modern infrastructure, reflecting the blend of tradition and contemporaneity that characterizes Aveiro.
The canal beneath the bridge offers a tranquil view, often enlivened by the passage of typical moliceiros boats. The tree-lined banks and the constant movement of residents and visitors make the place particularly pleasant for a stroll or to appreciate the city's surroundings.
The Côjo area was, between the 18th and 20th centuries, an important center for activities related to ceramics, salt, and fishing. To facilitate the transport of goods between the two banks, several pedestrian bridges emerged, including this one. Initially built of wood or metal, the bridge had a primarily practical function, serving the daily lives of the people who worked on the canal banks.
Over time, it lost its former functional role and began to assume a more symbolic and affectionate significance, becoming an integral part of the city's visual and emotional identity.
Today, the Cais do Côjo Bridge is known for the thousands of colorful ribbons that cover its railings. These ribbons are placed by couples, families, and friends, in a symbolic gesture that celebrates emotional bonds and promises of reunion. The colorful ribbons contrast with the blue of the sky and the sparkle of the water, creating a vibrant and photogenic image.
The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, ideal for a break or to admire the urban landscape reflected in the canal. At dusk, the light on the bridge and the colors of the ribbons create an especially beautiful scene, highly sought after by those who enjoy photography or simply wish to enjoy a serene moment by the water.
