The Obelisco da Liberdade is located in Praça Joaquim de Melo Freitas, in the parish of Vera-Cruz, in the most central area of the city of Aveiro, known as "Beira Mar". Its prominent position, next to the headquarters of Clube dos Galitos and in the vicinity of the bridges over the Ria's canals, makes it an urban landmark. The square where it stands is paved with traditional Portuguese cobblestones, with a central circle in black marble surrounding it, also featuring discreet decorative elements and lighting designed to highlight the monument, offering a pleasant environment for a moment of pause.

A Historical Symbol of Aveiro

Inaugurated on December 26, 1909, the Obelisco da Liberdade was erected with a dual purpose: to commemorate the centenary of the birth of José Estêvão, a notable orator and fervent defender of Liberalism, and to honor the citizens of Aveiro who bravely participated in the liberal struggles of the 19th century. This monument is a testament to the relevant participation of the city of Aveiro in the transition from the absolutist regime to constitutional monarchy in Portugal, especially remembering those who were sacrificed in the Revolution of 1828. Its construction was an initiative of the historic Clube dos Galitos, which thus sought to perpetuate the memory of those who fought for freedom.

Style and Engraved Messages

From an architectural point of view, the obelisk exhibits traits of the Art Nouveau style, characteristic of the era of its construction. The authorship is attributed to the workshop of Ernesto Korrodi, in Leiria. The structure consists of an obelisk in the shape of a truncated pyramid, resting on a quadrangular base pedestal. The materials used are granite, limestone, and marble, giving it a robust and elegant presence. The connection between the obelisk and the pedestal is made by a volume ornamented with vegetal elements, denoting attention to artistic detail. On the four faces of the pedestal, inscriptions can be read that evoke the date of the anniversary and the tribute to those who fought for freedom. On the pavement, a later plaque, placed in 2006, lists the names of the Aveiro martyrs of freedom, reinforcing the message of gratitude and civic memory.
