The Morgados da Pedricosa Gallery is located in Aveiro, integrated into the urban area of Misericórdia. Its location places it in an area that reflects the local atmosphere and the richness of Aveiro's built heritage, facilitating its discovery by visitors to the city.
This cultural space occupies the ground floor of a notable building, known as Casa Morgados da Pedricosa. Its roots date back to the 17th century, presenting itself as one of the most beautiful examples of civil architecture of that era in the city of Aveiro. The house was designed following the model of the manorial constructions of the time, with a lower floor intended for commercial or service functions, where the gallery is now located, and an upper floor reserved for noble residence.
Throughout the centuries, Casa Morgados da Pedricosa was the setting for important passages in local history, linked to influential families. It began as the property of Jorge Botelho d’Eça, a figure who held the position of Municipal Clerk (Escrivão da Câmara), which is why the property was also known as Casa dos Botelhos d’Eça or Casa dos Escrivães da Câmara. His son, André Botelho d’Eça Teles, followed in his father's footsteps and was recorded in the annals of Aveiro for having formalized the royal decree that elevated the locality to the category of city in 1759. Later, in the 19th century, the house hosted the family of Judge Francisco Manuel Gravito da Veiga Lima, serving as a setting for significant moments for the liberals of Aveiro. Later, in the late 19th century, the property belonged to the Mello Guimarães family, before being acquired by the Municipality in 1979 and rehabilitated for the purpose we know today, maintaining its historical and cultural relevance.
Currently, the Morgados da Pedricosa Gallery establishes itself as a reference point for plastic arts in the region. The regular program of exhibitions is managed by Círculo Aveiro Arte, an association of plastic artists with a long history, founded in 1971. This space allows visitors to explore a variety of artistic expressions, set in an environment that combines the modernity of contemporary creation with the weight of a centuries-old history.
