House of Saint Zita

Category: Civil Architecture > House

District: Aveiro > Aveiro > Aveiro > Misericórdia

Location

Casa de Santa Zita, also historically known as Palacete Visconde da Granja, stands in the heart of Aveiro, in the Misericórdia area. Its main facade is clearly visible from Praça Marquês de Pombal and Rua Visconde da Granja, inviting a leisurely stroll through the city's central area.

A Historical Heritage

This imposing residence originated in the 19th century, built by order of António Barreto Ferraz de Vasconcelos, the Viscount of Granja. Originally conceived as a noble house, its history reflects the social and architectural evolution of Aveiro. In the 20th century, the building changed ownership and purpose, adopting the name Casa de Santa Zita when it began to house an institution dedicated to the training and support of domestic workers. Currently, the building maintains its private residential function, serving as a visible testament to the city's past.

The Splendor of the Tiles

One of the most captivating elements of Casa de Santa Zita is its rich tile decoration. The facade is profusely covered with panels of white and blue tiles, a work by the artist Licínio Pinto, executed in the early 20th century at Fábrica da Fonte Nova. These tiles, although classically inspired, already show the first signs of the emerging Art Nouveau influence, visible in their geometric and floral patterns. On the second floor, you can observe six panels depicting the seasons and mythological scenes. On the upper floor, two panels stand out with "albarradas" (vases of flowers) and a triangular pediment displaying the coat of arms with the initials of the Viscount of Granja and his noble crown, all in tile.

Architectural Lines

The palace features architecture with a clear Neoclassical influence, characteristic of the 19th century, a period of great urban development in Aveiro. The current structure is notable for having been formed by the joining of three old houses that existed on the site. Its composition is longitudinal, with three distinct bodies that articulate harmoniously. Observe the pilastered quoins that delimit the bodies, the French windows adorned with iron railings, and the cornice and parapet finishes that lend the ensemble an imposing and elegant presence.
