The José Luciano de Castro Museum is located in the Arcos area, in the town of Anadia. It is housed in a historic mansion located on Rua Alexandre Seabra, integrated into the Arcos and Mogofores area.
This museum space is dedicated to José Luciano de Castro, a prominent figure in Portuguese politics (1834-1914). He was recognized as a notable statesman during the liberal monarchy, having led the progressive party and served as prime minister on several occasions. The museum is located in the residence where he lived.
The building that houses the museum is a Mansion built in 1860. Its construction was an initiative of José Luciano de Castro's father-in-law, Alexandre Ferreira de Seabra (1818-1891). Alexandre Ferreira de Seabra distinguished himself as a lawyer and is known for having authored the first Portuguese Civil Procedure Code.
Inside the Mansion, visitors can explore a diverse collection. The collections include the library that belonged to José Luciano de Castro and his family. Exhibited are paintings, religious imagery, antique furniture, ceramics, and glass. The museum also features goldsmithery, toreutics (metalwork), decorations, and numismatics (coins and medals). It is possible to observe period costumes, both official and civilian, and a variety of books and paper documentation. A private collection of malacology, dedicated to the study and exhibition of shells, is also part of the collection available for viewing.
